Hair Flowers

When I first decided I wanted native flowers, I sent an email around to heaps of different florists trying to suss out what sort of bouquet I could get for a March wedding.

I was becoming disillusioned with replies such as "proteas" or "dried flowers" until I got an email from Sally Philip. She sent me back heaps of ideas and some constructive advice about was and wasn't in season that time of year. When I met with her she showed me lots of creative ideas and showed me that I wasn't limited to a spikey dried up arrangements like the ones gathering dust at Grandmas house.

 But her floral talents are not limited to the alive variety!

She also hand makes beautiful silk flowers to adorn your hair. Nice big beautiful ones!

grey and yellow bouquet

I really like this bunch of flowers I saw on The Brides Cafe. 

Those velvety grey leaves against the bright yellow flowers..

Ranunculus and Dusty Miller. Noice!

Those soft grey leaves always make me look twice, here is another beautiful bouquet with Dusty Miller that I have admired, the grey looks amazing with the white as well.

botanics

Even though it's a bit daggy I sorta quite like Notebook Magazine.

Last months come with a free little calander for 2010.

The illustrations are by Amanda Upton and I think they are quite lovely

The two left hand flowers and both Australian Natives.. wattle which is one of my favourites and means "secret love".. so perhaps not the most appropriate wedding flower, if you pay any mind to that kind of thing! I am sad to report that one of the two bushes I planted in my own garden has just mysteriously died. 

The Waratah is the illustration on the bottom left, it is native to the south eastern states of Australia (NSW, Vic and Tassie) and symbolises "prosperity"  

Cattleya is a type of orchid from Latin America and the meaning for this flower is "mature charm".

Magnolias are native to SE Asia and their meaning is "dignity and nobility"

My family is from the wheatbelt and the Mister grew up there.

I think thats why simple wheat stalks appeal to me

confetti alternative

We aren't allowed confetti at our venue. Because it's in the National Park.

And those harmless looking circles of paper are little pieces of litter.

Which are really hard to clean up.

I do love the tradition of guests throwing things into the air out over the Bride and Groom.

But I haven't seen it done at any of the weddings that I've ever been to.

I'm not sure why.. because it's such a fun and festive thing to do!

Due to confetti being so out of fashion I think we might use flower petals.

I don't really want rose petals though.

Not that I have anything against roses.

Maybe some dainty little hyacinth petals. Like these ones:

But I don't think I'd go with the paper cones.

They look like something you actually have to make

I'd probably get some of those 10c lolly bags instead

And I could put them in a snazzy tray to be passed around. Like this one:

They could be handed out to the guests, sort of like those old fashioned cigarette and popcorn sellers. But with petals.

And I can actually think of a few of friends who would do a really awesome job of circulating during the pre-ceremony mingle and passing them out to those who wanted them.

And I think her bouquet deserves an honourable mention with those feathers included amongst the flowers.. and that long ribbon holding it all together..

flower fix

Don't think any of these are native to Australia.. but I'm still enjoying the beautiful colour combinations. I'm even digging some of the all-white bunches and more structured formal bouquets

Homemade native bouquet

I love the look of this Port Macquarie wedding!

A bride in yellow! Casual Groomsen! Native bouquets! Which she made herself! And the succulent centrepieces! And flat shoes! (Which Erin describes as 'one of her best decisions') Three cheers for that! And three cheers for beach cricket!

They opted to hire a magician instead of giving out favours which proved to be another hit, not only with the kids but the adults as well. 

I really love the autumn colours and the beautiful native flowers from this beautiful relaxed beachside wedding.

There isnt really anything shabby about it..

It looks so cool.. I wonder who would have actually tied all those jars to ropes, filled them with flowers and hung them from the ceiling.. (the florist I guess?) it seems fiddly and time consuming.. but totally worth it.
